Friday, December 3, 2010

The sixth grade will continue our Health unit with Mr. Roseman along with working on physical fitness in class.  Sixth grade has a goal packet that will be due for Band/Choir on Thursday and General Music on Friday.  We are opening up the gym between 7:00 and 7:30 on Tuesdays and offer different activities to the middle school kids with the help of Mr. Roseman and myself.  The students will have some options on choices of activities.  Mr. Roseman will also bring different guests in from time to time such as a rumba instructor.  We will have our seventh session this coming Tuesday (December 7) from 7:00-7:30 am in the gym.

Mrs. Simms will have Christmas Program practice for grades 4 and 5 during PE time for Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday this week (10:05-11:30).  Due to this, 5-Welty will not meet Wednesday for PE class, and 4/5-McMcMahon will not meet on Thursday and Friday for class.  However, 4-Eastman has picked up a PE class on Monday from 10:05-10:45 in addition to their normal PE class on Tuesday (4-E will not have class on Thursday).  We will continue to work on basketball units and we will be playing games this week.

PE Agenda For November 29-December 3

The eighth grade will complete their second quarter in PE either November 29 or 30, respectively.  The sixth grade will start their second quarter December 2 or 3, respectively.  The sixth grade journals are due the first class and Mr. Roseman will also be here to talk about health concepts. We will have our sixth session this coming Tuesday (November 30) from 7:00-7:30 am in the gym.  We had our best turnout yet on Tuesday November 23.  Middle school students should wear PE clothes, regardless if they have PE on Tuesday or not, if they choose to come.

Third grade (Norman homeroom), fourth grade, and fifth grade homerooms are all at different points of basketball units.  We have been learning about ball-handling, dribbling, and have started to work on proper shooting technique.  We will also work on man-to-man defensive technique as well.  This will be the last full week that students in fourth and fifth grades have PE in the second quarter.  Students will be practicing for the Christmas Program beginning Wednesday December 8 during normal Unified Arts time in the mornings.

Mrs. Elliot’s class is still working on a volleyball unit, focusing on bumping and setting using proper technique.

Miss O’Neal’s class will work on moving to music and relay races.

Kindergarten and first grade are working on units with throwing and catching overhand.

Pre-school will start to work on learning how to throw (underhand) and catch beanbags with a partner.

Have a Happy Thanksgiving!

This Week's Agenda

The eighth grade will continue our Health unit with Mr. Roseman, focusing on better choices we can make with eating foods.  We tried foods in class this week that could be healthier alternatives than what we might be eating now.  We will still work on Physical Education during our time as well. We will have our fifth session this coming Tuesday (November 23) from 7:00-7:30 am in the gym.  We are looking for more participation—we have only had 2 participants each of the four weeks so far.  Middle school students should wear PE clothes, regardless if they have PE on Tuesday or not, if they choose to come.  The band students will meet for PE on Tuesday from 7:50-8:25 and should wear gym clothes to school and bring their school uniform with them.  Choir students will go with Mrs. Simms to practice before Mass.  We are doing this because we had an oversight in the original Unified Arts schedule and we did not account for Mass on Tuesday, so it will allow the band students to have PE for five classes, instead of 4.  Also, a reminder that sixth grade students should be working on their journaling five days of a seven day period for the second quarter and the seventh grade is working on the same thing for the start of the third quarter.

We will play some Thanksgiving games with the younger grades.

Have a Happy Thanksgiving!

Second grade (O’Neal) will continue to work on our kickball unit.  We will play kickball games and teaching points may be interjected during the games.  This will be our final week for kickball.  The main goals are to have each student understand what they should do with the ball if it comes to them while they are on defense (in the field)—depending on the situation and to watch the ball while they are on offense (kicking team)—especially while they are on the bases, to know and understand if they need to run or not.

Kindergarten will continue to work on throwing and catching overhand.  We will continue to throw with a partner this week.

This Week At A Glance

Parents,

The new rotation for middle school (start of second quarter) is Monday and I will have the seventh grade band and choir students along with the seventh grade general music that has a few sixth graders for the next three weeks.  Students will still need their PE clothes for class even though it is a dress out week—I will give them time at the end of class to change clothes.  The seventh grade homework will be due Monday or Tuesday, respectively.  The sixth grade and eighth grade should be working on their homework (5 days of physical activities in a 7-day period) at home and journaling the activities with one parent signature for every 7-day period.  We are excited to be started a new project in the second quarter for middle school that involves the promotion and education of nutrition along with physical education and wellness.  We are partnering with the PF Jr. Foundation (website is http://www.pfjrfoundation.org/) to help educate the students on proper nutrition and the importance of staying physically active among other things.

The fourth and fifth grade will play a movement game that involves strategy, aerobic activity, action and reaction, and teamwork (cooperative activities).

The second-third grade split and the third grade classes will continue to work on jumping rope along with playing movement games that involve aerobic activity and teamwork.

Second grade (O’Neal) will continue to work on jumping rope along with kickball unit—we will try to play games this week.

First grade will work on jumping rope and a movement game that involves strategy and teamwork.

Kindergarten will continue to work on jumping rope along with a unit that will focus on throwing and catching a tennis ball overhand.

Preschool will start to work on the balance beam and a partner movement activity.

This Week's Agenda

As a reminder: the seventh and eighth grade students should be logging their daily PE activities (30 minutes a day minimum for five of the seven days of the week accompanied by one parent signature a week for the six weeks that I do not see them for class).  The sixth grade will do the mile this week for President’s testing (General Music students on Monday and Band/Choir on Tuesday).  We stress pacing and breathing.  Any student that has an inhaler, due to asthma, needs to have it with them in class on their respective day.  Also, the final classes for first quarter PE will be this Thursday and Friday, so the sixth grade will receive the same homework assignment that the seventh and eighth grades are currently working on while they do not have PE.

The fourth and fifth grade will play a movement game that involves strategy, aerobic activity, action and reaction, and teamwork (cooperative activities).

The second-third grade split and the third grade classes will continue to work on jumping rope along with playing movement games that involve aerobic activity and teamwork.

Second grade (O’Neal) will continue to work on jumping rope along with kickball unit—learning fielding situations (where to throw the ball if it is kicked to the infield, to the outfield), and continuing to learn each position and responsibilities of each.

First grade will work on jumping rope and a movement game that involves strategy and teamwork.

Kindergarten will continue to work on jumping rope along with a unit that will focus on throwing and catching a tennis ball—throwing underhand the proper way (strong hand and weak hand) and catching with two hands—pretending the tennis ball is an egg.  We will start to learn how to throw the ball overhand this week as well.

Preschool will start to work on the balance beam and a partner movement activity.
