PE Agenda for November 25 and 26

Parents,

November is American Diabetes Month, COPD Awareness Month, Lung Cancer Awareness Month, National Healthy Skin Month, and National Stomach Cancer Awareness Month.
We have added jumping rope to our stretching routine in many of our classes and we will work on it for a good portion of the year. Through the use of balance and coordination, it is a full body exercise that works on brain development and it is good for our heart. In my opinion, swimming is the best exercise for the body, and jump rope is number two.

With our abbreviated week this week--8th Grade will have PE on Monday.  We will NOT have Middle School Unified Arts on Tuesday because of Mass.  We will pick up with Grade 6 on Monday December 2.

We will play a Thanksgiving game on Monday.

Tuesday's Schedule:
One of our parents (Mrs. Kozenski) has a giant map that she allows us to use each year. The map will be in the gym Tuesday November 26. Each homeroom will have an opportunity to come in and do different activities with the map. We will not be able to be in the gym that Tuesday (fourth grade, Catton homeroom, and second grade are affected). If you child is in those homerooms, please be prepared to go outside for class.

Have a great Thanksgiving!

Be safe to all who are traveling!

Good Luck Rams Teams!

PE Agenda October 21-25

Parents,

October is Eye Injury Prevention Month, National Bullying Prevention Month, National Health Education Week (14-18), World Food Day (16), Respiratory Care Week (20-26), and Red Ribbon Week (23-31).

We are nearly done with President's testing in grades 3-8 for the first quarter. The testing consists of a series of Physical Education tests that gauge muscular strength, muscular endurance, speed and quickness, flexibility, and cardiovascular endurance. The tests include pull-ups, curl-ups, flex arm hang, shuttle run, pushups, sit and reach, mile run (jog) and I have added an additional test and that is the pole climb on the playground. Returning students will be told their results of last year and the idea is they show improvement from their fourth quarter results as they perform the tests in the first quarter this year (middle school has a journal that previous year's results are a part of, so they can physically see their results before testing). We will test again in the fourth quarter to gauge improvement over the course of the year. Students that are new in grades 4-7 plus our 3rd grade students will be creating a baseline result with their first quarter testing. They will need to improve on that result in quarter 4 when we test again. President's testing satisfies our Indiana State Standards in Physical Education for self assessment and formal fitness assessments. We have either started the mile or will be working on it this week in most classes.

Students in kindergarten will continue to work on the balance beam--going backwards. First and second grades have completed their work on the balance beam. We have begun work on movement games that involve balance, running, teamwork, and awareness.

Good Luck Ram Sports Teams!
HAVE A GREAT FALL BREAK!

PE Uniforms For Sale*****

Parents,

If your child has misplaced his or her PE uniform or simply wants to purchase an additional pair of PE shorts or t-shirt, I have them available in my office.

We do have a few gold shorts left over from last year.  We are phasing the gold shorts out, but we have a sale going on for $5 a pair (a very limited supply of adult and youth sizes).  The gold shorts can be worn for the entire 2013-2014 school year.

We have two kinds of green shorts--both kinds are $14 a pair.  We have a dry mesh that is true to size and a dazzle short (shiny) that runs bigger in the waist and longer down the leg, both in adult and youth sizes.

We also have our green PE shirts, running $8 a piece.  We have both adult and youth sizes.

Checks can be made out to: Holy Spirit PTO and can either be given to me or to the office.

Please specify what size(s) is needed.

Or you can send me an email at: kbranigan@holyspirit-indy.org

I do not have sweatpants or sweatshirts for sale.  Students can start wearing a solid colored pair of sweatpants (navy blue, gray, black, or hunter green) in addition to Holy Spirit sweatpants, if they have ordered them already.  Sweatpants should be worn over the top of their PE shorts.  Sweatshirts should have the Holy Spirit logo.

Thank you!

As far as shorts and t-shirts, students should be wearing a combination of:

Acceptable T-Shirts for PE Class

*****Friday Spirit Shirt (Fridays only--this replaces the PE t-shirt on Fridays only)--PE shorts still need to be worn

Acceptable Shorts for PE Class
Navy Blue Holy Spirit Shorts
Gold Holy Spirit Shorts
Green Holy Spirit Shorts

If you are a new student and you have ordered a PE uniform, you should wear an appropriate pair of shorts and t-shirt for class until the ordered apparel arrives.

If you are a returning student, wear any combination of an "old" PE uniform until the new one arrives.  The "old" uniform(s) can be worn during the 2013-2014 school year.

Please hold off on sending your student in sweatshirts and sweatpants.  I will send information out on this once it starts getting cooler.

Thank you!

PE Newsletter for August 26-29

Parents,

We have been working on our intial procedures for PE during our first full week of school.  Within the procedures, we have discussed our fire and tornado plans.  I have challenged the students to ask parents if they have fire and tornado evacuation plans for their homes, so if your son or daughter asks, I am probably the culprit.

A reminder that next week is a 4-day school week (no school on Friday August 30).  The following homerooms will only have PE once next week because of the schedule: DiSalvo, Hammans, Porter, Elliot (First Grade), Hill.  Also, the middle school schedule will be: 6th Grade--Monday, 7th Grade--Tuesday, 8th Grade--Thursday.

We will continue procedures next week, focusing on our stretches.

Have a great week!

Parents,

Tuesday May 28 will be a normal school day.  Tuesday will be a "C" Day (8th Grade will have PE).

Enjoy The Three Day Weekend!

Back Home Again in Indiana...

Teacher Appreciation Week

Parents,

Thank you very much for all of the gifts and food this week.

I have had several parents this week express their gratitude.

The feeling is mutual and we, as teachers, don't say it enough, but thank you for sending your children to a Catholic school.

I know I feel very appreciated and thank you for that!

P.E. Agenda May 20-24

Parents,

Due to our schedule the week of Memorial Day, several classes will be finished with P.E. for the year this week--Kindergarten, Ahonen homeroom, DiSalvo homeroom, Fifth Grade, and Sixth Grade.

We are finishing up President's Testing in grades 3-8.  Upon completion, we will be spending a few minutes in class coming up with ways that we can stay active over the summer and ways to improve on President's Testing for next school year.

Kindergarten, first grade, and second grade will be playing soccer games this week.  We will use small groupings so that each student has an opportunity in full participation.  We certainly are looking for goals to be scored, but the main idea is passing the ball to teammates and teamwork in general, using the skills that we have worked on in class.

Have a great week!

Friday, May 10, 2013

P.E. Agenda May 13-17

Parents,

We will be finishing up President's Testing in Grades 4-8.  Students have really been working hard to improve their results from First Quarter.

Third Grade finished up this past week.  We will be working on ways to improve for next year.

Kindergarten, first grade, and second grade are working on soccer units.  We have learned about kicking short and long distances.  We will be incorporating both types of kicking into the goal and use a goalie in station work.  We will be starting to play soccer games in small groups to give each student as many opportunities to score as possible.

Good Luck Track and 56 Kickball!

Have a Great Week!

P.E. Agenda May 6-10

Parents,

As a reminder the Annual Fund Dinner will take place in the gym on Thursday May 9.  Due to this, we will be out of the gym Wednesday and Thursday this week.  Friday is a noon dismissal.

The Middle School Schedule
Monday May 6--"C" Day--8th Grade has PE
Tuesday May 7--"A" Day--7th Grade has PE
Thursday May 9--"B" Day--6th Grade has PE
Friday May 10--"C" Day--8th Grade has PE

We will continue President's Testing in Grades 3-8.  We are nearing mile time.  If a student has asthma and they have an inhaler, please make sure it will be with them each day they have PE, in the event we do the mile that particular day.

We will continue our Soccer Unit with Kindergarten, First Grade, and Second Grade.  We have been working on short distance kicking, and playing a game that involves short distance kicking with the A,B, C's.  We will be starting long distance kicking--using our toe (tip of shoe) to get underneath of the ball instead of the middle inside part of shoe for short distance kicking.

Good luck to any and all who are running the Mini on Saturday!

Have a great week!

P.E. Agenda April 29-May 3

Parents,

As a reminder, this is I-STEP week and the schedule has changed a bit because of it.

We had the Middle School Unified Arts calendar blocked out the entire week to have our 20-minutes of fitness in the mornings to prepare for I-STEP.

However, Mrs. Chappelow is in need of middle school students to finish projects before the Annual Fund Dinner and I am in need of students to do President's Testing.

Middle School Unified Arts Schedule
Monday April 29--8th Grade will have PE and Art
Tuesdsay April 30--7th Grade will have PE and Art
Wednesday May 1--7th Grade will again have PE and Art (Mass Day is Friday May 3 this week)
Thursday May 2--8th Grade will again have PE and Art

Unless the plan changes, the 6th Grade will NOT have PE this week.

Third Grade, Fourth Grade, and Fifth Grade will continue to work on President's Testing.

Second Grade will continue to work on a Soccer Unit.

I will not see Kindergarten this week and the plan for now is for me not to have First Grade (Ahonen) homeroom either.  If I-STEP is completed by Thursday, I will see First Grade (Chandler homeroom) Friday afternoon only.

Please make sure students are getting enough rest at night and eating a healthy breakfast in the morning.

Have a great week!

P.E. Agenda April 22-26

Parents,

Grades 3-7 will continue to work on President's Testing this week.  The goal is for students to improve on their result from the first quarter.

We will also work on an I-STEP question in class to prepare the students for I-STEP (next week).

I will not see the 8th grade this week due to their D.C. trip.

Kindergarten, first grade, and second grade will all start a soccer unit, focusing on partner kicking--short and long distances.

Have a great week!

P.E. Agenda April 15-19

Parents,

The Spring Book Fair will be held in the gym all week, so we would like to be outside for class.  Please have students prepared to be outside (sweatshirts and sweatpants over their PE uniforms).  If the weather is poor, we will be in classrooms.

Our next round of I-STEP is rapidly approaching (April 29-May 3), so we will be incorporating an I-STEP question into PE classes (Grades 3-8).  This round of I-STEP includes multiple choice questions, so that will be our focus with both Math and Language Arts.

Grades 3-8 have started President's Testing.  Students are expected to improve on their quarter 1 result.  Middle school students will be putting their current results in their journal.

Kindergarten, first grade, and second grade have all been working with freeze dance, dancing to the rhythm and mood of the music.  We will finish this activity up this week.  We will also start a soccer unit beginning next week.

Have a great week!

P.E. Agenda April 2-5

Parents,

Happy Easter!

We have started President's Testing in middle school.  Students are expected to improve on their quarter 1 result.

We will also start President's Testing in grades 3-5 this week.

Students in Kindergarten, first, and second grades will work on jump ropes along with different movement games.  Mrs. Ahonen's class will finish on basketball this week--we did not have a chance to meet this past week for class because of the snow day on Monday and the wheelchair basketball that was in gym for Disabilities Week on Thursday.

Speaking of the wheelchair basketball.  I had the opportunity to play 2 on 2 with the wheelchair Pacers on Thursday afternoon in front of the middle school students.  It was an incredible experience and gave me a completely new appreciation for someone who can play basketball in a wheelchair.  It was awesome!

Have a great week and Happy Easter!

P.E. Agenda for March 25-29

Parents,

The middle school schedule:

Monday and Friday (March 25 and 29 are both "C" days)--8th grade has PE
Tuesday (March 26 is an "A" Day)--7th Grade has PE
Thursday (March 27 is a "B" Day)--6th Grade has PE

We will be starting President's Testing in middle school.  Students have been reminded several times over the course of quarters 2 and 3 to be doing things on their own to get ready for testing.  Students will have to improve on their quarter 1 results.

On Tuesday March 26, I will see just the 7-General Music Group for Middle School due to a Disability Presentation that will be taking place at 8:30 in the gym for seventh grade.  This will be part of an entire week-long Disability Awareness Week put on by Mrs. Amy Moran.  The 7th Grade Band/Choir/Annual Fund Dinner Group will have 1 less class than the 7-General Music group because of this.

We will also have some other interuptions in our schedule due to Disabilities Awareness Week.  Afternoon classes on both Wednesday March 27 (Kindergarten) and Thursday March 28 (First and Third Grades) will be out of the gym.  We will either be outside if the weather cooperates or in classrooms for PE.  Also, Friday March 29 is a noon dismissal for Good Friday.

Grades 3-5 will work on movement games to get back into the swing of things and we will start President's Testing next week (April 2-5) in many of the homerooms.

Kindergarten-second grade will finish up their basketball unit.  Our main focus has been dribbling and passing.  We will talk about and work on proper shooting form without shooting an actual basket.  It is important to do things the right way and I do not want to sacrifice proper form to make a shot in a 10-foot goal as the students learn the proper technique of shooting.

P.E. Agenda for the Week of March 11-14

Parents,

As a reminder, we have a short week next week.  The fourth quarter starts on Monday.

Middle School Schedule:
Monday March 11--"C" Day (8th Grade has PE)
Tuesday March 12--"A" Day (7th Grade has PE)
Wednesday March 13--"B" Day (6th Grade has PE)--Mass will be on Thursday March 14, so we will have Unified Arts on Wednesday

We will be doing several movement activities in classes this week.  We will be going over the schedule the week we come back from Spring Break.  Middle school will start fourth quarter President's Testing around the time we get back, so we can fit everything in.  We have been talking in class since the second quarter about practicing our eight tests.  Students need to be working on their own to improve from first quarter to fourth quarter.

I will see my normal class schedule on Monday and Tuesday--both full days of school, then Wednesday will be until noon.  I will not see the fifth grade after Mass on Thursday due to Awards Day.

We will be working on movement activities in grades 3-5 and finishing up our basketball units with grades K-2.

If you would like to schedule a conference with me, go to Sign Up Genius.  Conference Day is Wednesday March 13.

Have a great week!

P.E. Agenda February 25-March 1

Parents,

February is Heart Awareness Month. Here is a link to the American Heart Association website:

http://www.heart.org/HEARTORG/

A reminder that PE shorts and shirts need to be worn underneath sweatpants and sweatshirts. The shirt and shorts are what the students get credit for during class. Sweatpants and sweatshirts are perfectly acceptable as long as the normal PE uniform is worn underneath.

We have been working on questioning during the beginning part of classes in preparation of I-STEP. The questioning will involve ideas related to our topics in PE class along with Math and Language Arts.

We will have our normal Middle School classes this week, but we will take a break from our normal classes during I-STEP week (March 4-8) and we will be doing various movement activities with the students prior to taking the I-STEP.

Middle school has been working on a teamwork unit. Some of the main ideas we are working on: making proper choices of words in regard to others (effective communication), getting out of our comfort zone of who we interact with during class, and making a meaningful contribution to the group (team). We have also been working on jump rope during class and we have recently started jumping rope for endurance (at 2 minutes).

Third, fourth, and fifth grades will be working with teamwork. We will focus on many of the same topics as middle school. We have been working with the scooters in addition to teamwork (relays and tag games).
Kindergarten, first grade, and second grade have been working on a basketball unit. The initial phase is dribbling the basketball effectively--using fingertips, ball below waist, and knees bent. We have started doing two-ball dribbling, which works both sides of the brain and is great for coordination. We are starting to really show improvement on the two-ball dribbling!  We  will be starting to pass this week--starting with bounce passing.

Thank you to Jack Doyle--Holy Spirit Alum for coming in on the morning of Friday February 22.  Jack will be graduating from Western Kentucky University and is hoping to get drafted in the NFL in April.  He spoke to our students about setting goals and working hard.  He is the nephew of Miss Glenn.

Have a great weekend and good luck to our sports teams!

Parents,

There is an error on the Unified Arts Middle School Calendar. Martin Luther King Jr. Day is Monday, January 21 and the calendar shows it as an "A" day. We are not in school that day, so we will simply pick up the schedule as normal on Tuesday, January 22 and that will be a "B" day.

We will be working on questioning during the beginning part of classes in preparation of I-STEP. The questioning will involve ideas related to our topics in PE class along with Math and Language Arts.
